I do remember reading shortly before this movie came out in '81, that Shelley Winters' character playing an agent, I believe is mostly based upon a real-life talent agent who was a big-shot at the time. She wore dark glasses and wildly colorful and overflowing dresses, much like Shelley's character did.
What was the name of the real-life talent agent her character was based upon?

Mengers was (reportedly) so incensed by Blake Edwards' depiction of her in SOB that she declared: "I hope an Alp falls on his house!"
To which Edwards (reportedly) responded: "I'd rather have an Alp fall on my house than Sue Mengers."
Great comeback from a great director!
I'm glad we have someone like Blake to pull the veil (or, in this case, the tent) off the self-important Hollywood types.

I've never heard anything concrete regarding Mengers' sexuality but Winters'character in this movie was definitely a lesbian.
