No one here seems to know that "Taps" is a pale remake of a British masterwork entitled "If", with Malcom McDowell. All of you need to see what the word "classic" means. I guess "If" has been forgotten. More's the pity.

I rewatched this movie yesterday just as Valkyrie was coming out here and it's so interesting to look back on the lives of these young - soon to be great - actors.
Yeah, Sean Penn as the mother hen yet anti-authoritarian sergeant in The Thin Red Line, Tim Hutton as the colonel in The General's Daughter and even Cruise as the embattled Stauffenberg facing another siege in Valkyrie. It all started here in Taps.

"If" and "Lord of the Flies."

There's a lot of Korean and English movies that are set in all boys schools if you liked Taps for the camaraderie aspect. Try Once Upon a Time in High School for starters, http://www.imdb.com/board/10390205/ , it's set in 70's Seoul, has great, realistic fight scenes and a decent coming of age story to go with it.
Also, not sure if it's been mentioned or if you were aware, but Sean Penn plays a war time sergeant in The Thin Red Line and it's kind of like looking at how his character could have turned out after this traumatic incident in his early life/career.

i would say the last castle, kinda like it, very good though.

I second "Lords of Discipline" and, if you want to see a less bleak picture of a military school, recommend "The Long Gray Line." It's a bit hard to find and somewhat sapppy though.

Red Dawn is of course a classic too.

Check out Toy Soldiers (1991). A boys boarding school is taken over by terrorists and the boys fight back. Not as good as Taps but definitly similar.

I attended Valley Forge Military Academy shortly after Taps came out, so it has special meaning for me.
As for similar movies, you may want to take a look at "The Lords of Discipine", which also has a stellar cast of young soon to be big name actors. The film centers around the first black cadet to enter a southern military academy (basically the Citadel)in the 1960's. The book by Pat Conroy is even better than the movie.

The two films that come to mind are "Patton" and "The Falcon & The Snowman" for obvious reasons.
