This film was a staple in my childhood. When I was 7-8 yrs old it was new and in heavy rotation on HBO. I loved it.but hated it at the same time. Those two scenes where kids are shot and killed were always so hard to watch, esp when the cadet was shot, it was shocking and perfectly timed in the film. Well I just watched it again on the Grit channel.im now 41, that scene is still tough. Not to mention the star power..Penn and Cruise didnt even go through puberty yet and its hard to believe Penn morphed into Jeff Spicolli a year later lol! The movie made me suspicious of military cadets, parents, the system, and snd the local meatheads..just a great flick!

I agree. I don't understand people's criticism with this movie at all. Hutton's acting was fantastic while Cruise & Penn were great too. Sure there were realism issues, but if you can put that away for a few minutes and see it for what it is, a well done movie that in my opinion didn't try to do too much.
