Rewatching on Netlix and I can't believe I didn't think of this when I used to watch when it aired. There are two ways into Cheers, the front door stairs and the stairs down from Melvilles. If you're in a wheelchair, nobody will know your name.
I did sixty in five minutes once

Unless the disabled are planning on going in there regularly, I don't see why they have to pay to get the entrance renovated.

Nope. I was there in 2012, or '13. And it was awesome! No handicapped entry still.
RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Barbara Hale. You were great in Perry Mason. RIP William Christopher.

True. But these were the days before the ADA (Americans with Disability Act) came into being, which was 1990. Even in the early days of the law, it targeted major businesses and federally funded institutions, and not so much the small business owner.
I've been to the real Cheers (the Bull and Finch pub) and "Melville's" (Hampshire House), and it was a narrow staircase leading to a basement bar. The bar itself is much smaller and more cramped than "Cheers." But that was in 1997, so maybe it's been renovated to accommodate wheelchairs since then?

not wheelchair friendly
So what? That's the way it should be. If a businessman does not want to the expense of making it easy for a cripple to come in, they shouldn't have to.
besides, FYI - cheers is fake. It's not real.
If wanting illegals deported makes me a bigot - then wanting a rapist jailed makes you a sexist!

The writers planned originally to have a recurring character who was a wheelchair-bound, crotchety, racist old woman. You can see her sitting at tables in the pilot and early episodes, but her scenes were cut after she tested badly.
Here's writer Ken Levine talking about her:
http://kenlevine.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/friday-questions.html?m=1
"n Sam Simon's amazing Emmy TV Legends interview, he talks about a character that was cut out of the Cheers pilot: A racist woman in a wheelchair. She was supposed to be a regular character, but apparently the Charles Bros/Burrows agreed that her harshness didn't gel with the rest of the show.
Do you know anything about this?
Yes. The character was named Mrs. Littlefield. She was an opinionated old broad from the D.A.R. She was in the pilot and the decision to drop the character was made after it was filmed. Politics just didn't fit with the mix. So they cut out her part, but there are a few shots here and there where she is still in the background. Just look for a sweet white-haired little old lady who used to have lines.
Since several back-up scripts were in the works before the pilot was filmed, we also had to go back and write her out of those episodes as well.
Again, it was a case of an actor being let go not because they gave a bad performance or did anything wrong. It?s just that the character didn?t mesh with the others"

Is 'fiction' now the new taboo??
. . . .Was the show supposed to have a gay, blind, crippled, Asian, pedophile w/ an American Indian spouse & adopted middle eastern child before WE would feel content that (s)he was carried down the stairs?
