I think he was a Thing. He never trusted MacCready the entire movie but now at the end he trusts Mac Gready.
He doesn't even ask Mac Gready what happened to him. He doesn't act suspicious at all. He is simply waiting for MacGready to fall asleep so that he can take him over.
Forget out seeing breath coming out of Childs when he is talking. Forget about that theory of Childs changing color coats.
It's about the way Childs responses when seeing MacCready again. Cuz first of all, he sneaks up on MacCready. He doesn't seem to be surprised at the camp being ablaze either like he already knows.

As it happens I watched a video about this not too long back. There is a comic book out there and I think it is cannon. I cant recall exactly what happens but I think none of them are the thing at that time. Then they both go on a whacky adventure that takes them to south America and then the black dude ends up becoming the thing. I think.

Unlike his previous outdoor scenes, Childs doesn't have his head covered. More about my Childs theory and other issues:

There is a rare deleted scene I saw in a back room I saw where the film was edited that showed them both being rescued and neither one was The Thing.
