I know Daniel was an evil piece of work but he really confirmed it when he didn't seem that cut up about his grandfather being killed by his belovered Visitor pals and he then went on to kill Ruby.It was a stroke of genius when Calab phoned Steven and made out that Daniel was behind Brian being abducted. The look on Daniels face was priceless when he realized that he was going to be the main course in their canteen.
So it's treason then!

I hated that dude so much it was great knowing they were going to eat him. I felt the same way when Burke got eaten by the Alien in Aliens, hated Paul Reiser's character in that so bad I was happy when he got it.

In regards to the first point, I don't think the scientists were ostracized yet completely. However, he is a traitor and what is really sad is that he is Jewish and the grandson of a concentration camp survivor so he should know better. Glad he got eaten. Too bad we didn't see him get shot and dunked in the boiling water.

He did a lot wrong.

When Brian & Robin were out for a walk he interrupted to mention Mr Maxwell was a scientist..major grass no 1

When the Maxwells were hiding out in the Bernstein's summer house he called the Alien authorities.major grass 2

While the Maxwells managed to escape his actions resulted in his Dad, Mum, & Grandpa being arrested, interrogated, & tortured. His Grandpa died whilst in custody. At first he seems upset about it but when Brian pops round to give him a reward & a job promotion he feels happier

The boot licking episode.

Shooting Ruby

Shooting Fred which helped to capture Julie
When he got set up by the Resistance he still tried to be the tough guy when he said he felt no regrets over Ruby. All this without even being converted! He deserved to die imho.

Agreed, Daniel was a right little piece of beep Sadly there will always be his kind among us waiting to take advantage of a bad situation.

Daniel, along with Matt from Nip/Tuck, is one of the most loathsome teenage characters on TV.

I'll check the novel out, thanks! On screen, only the basics seem to be told and Steven bought into an anonymous caller very quickly and conveniently when otherwise there seems to be no reason for him to do so. Apart from plot expediency.

I think the scene in Final Battle doesn't really make that clear about the framing. Caleb calls Steven, who asks who this is, then Caleb tells him, "Never mind who this is, just listen. I just saw one of your boys captured and I know who it is that set him up." Steven says, "All right, tell me about him." Caleb says, "His name is Daniel Bernstein. I saw the whole thing." He then hands up on Steven. I think there should've been more dialogue here, like who got captured (Brian) and why Daniel would set him up. The novelization goes into it better.

That bit from TFB (1984) was one of the few things that made the followup miniseries worth watching. He may have heard stories, but believed none of it because of the power he had. Only when HE was affected did he finally go nuts.
Daniel was a psychopath. He was introduced in the 1983 original as being a loner, but not really a geek or anything else. He'd easily be mistaken as a regular lazy teenager in many ways. He was a bully, hated authority (his parents), and did what he wanted. The Visitors provided heaven to his eyes.
What's interesting is that the miniseries didn't take a victim of bullies and introduce the Youth Program - if a proper remake was done, that is one avenue they should pursue. Why have the kid find a gun and go back to school when (s)he could team up with the Visitors in a heavyhanded preachy parallel?

Hell, Daniel's parents aren't even in the sequel!
Actually they were in a non-speaking, uncredited cameo.
George Morfogen reprised his role as Stanley Bernstein in a scene towards the end when the balloons were rising, but Bonnie Bartlett was replaced as Lynn Bernstein.

I have a feeling that in their minds, there son was already dead. He caused his grandfather's death and killed Ruby, who knew him since he was a boy. The novelization has this better. Hell, Daniel's parents aren't even in the sequel! The irony is that Daniel is Jewish, so he should know better about sympathizing with Nazi type people.

Yes it was great seeing him pleading for his life to Steven as he was being draged away to the Visitor canteen.Daniel didn't show any mercy to his victums and it was only right that he ended up getting no mercy from Steven. The only sad thing is that I feel bad for his parants loseing their only child.
