The fat kid was right there at a barrier that he jumps over which separates them which he then runs away from!
All he had to do was stay by it and jump over it to dodge/avoid Chris.
Buddy is running down the middle of the road in front of Chris.
He could have gone off to the side and just laid down in the dark before she got behind him.
Or run to another building and climb it.
Anything is better than running in front of a car!
