Don't get me wrong, John Lithgow is one of the most underrated actors ever in Hollywood, but he didn't do nothing in "Terms of Endearment" that deserved a nomination. He filmed three days in a pause for the "Footloose" movie, and his character was average, on the other hand Jack earned it for playing Jack once again, but he was good and the competition was weak that year.

I enjoyed what I did see of John Lithgow. Always do. He played such a nice character. But would a woman trust a man moving in on her life the way he did?

Agree about the supermarket scene, which shouldn't be enough for an Oscar nomination! Plus he was still in voters minds because of being nominated the year before, it was a weak year for this category, they loved the film alot.so I can understand it. But personally I think Jeff Daniels should have been nominated instead, or Michael Williams for
Educating Rita
, or Burt Lancaster for
Local Hero
.

Jeff Daniels or even Danny DeVito should have been nominated instead.
Another baffling nomination was Chris Sarandon in Dog Day Afternoon.

LMAO! There is not one genuine moment in the entire performance! And yes, his eyes do light up. In fact, they light up so much I half expect him to jump onto the ****** camera and start humping it while screaming "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, I'M SO ENDEARING LOOK AT ME!"

His character, I felt, was so sweet and JL was so expressive. He played his part with more emotion than probably written yet wasn't even close to "over the top" It was a short stint, yes, but:
*Look at his eyes light up and smile when Emma says she may come in the bank sometime
*Look how at his kiss with Emma and how powerful it was (you'd think JL really hasn't gotten any in three years)
*Look at his face when Aurora interrupts the phone call where he's already scared calling
*Watch his whole
body
fall in his last scene, holding her picture, watching Emma pull away, knowing he's never going to see her again. Ugh gets me every time
It's just simply great acting. I think he fully deserved his nomination. What really gets me is that she wasn't able to see him "one last time" I always half expected him to come to the hospital to see Emma
