It's too bad this show came out before HD. We can only imagine how great it would have looked. You have to remember this was shot for TV, which back then was limited to a 4:3 ratio. so any widescreen effect would have to involve cropping.

Does anyone know if the BluRay set has all original music/songs or has it all been replaced due to rights issues like some other TV shows?

I agree 100%, here's a screenshot comparison with the HD version of the pilot which NBC aired about 5 years ago:
This already looks glorious compared to the DVD transfer. It will be a happy day when Miami Vice will be released in high definition. I don't have the HD version of the pilot that NBC aired, but if somebody has that, please share it!!
There was some talk about the HD release about a year ago, but after that nothing has happened:

Why would they need to renegotiate the music rights when they managed to release DVDs?
Even Netflix instant streams MV now!
(But I hate all greedy music companies that want to much money for their music. They have already been payed, why get more and more for the same music? )
Miami Vice was filmed on film. Not crappy video tape. There where no special effects that needs to be redone.
But. The DVD scans are horrible. Each episode needs cleaning and restoration.
The rights owners of MV should start to scan the material for 4K. They would make the money back from Netflix, blu rays, iTunes and feature 4K media.
I really would like extensive extra material. I bought the DVDs just for the extra material. A huge list of material on the package. I was disappointed when each segment was under 2 minutes.
(And re-score season 5 with Jan Hammer music.)

It seems unlikely at this pointfor a variety of reasonsthe biggest being the music rights. I assume (and I could be wrong) they would have to re-negotiate the music rights, and that could make it too time consuming and too costly to be worth it. Let's face it;
Vice
without the music isn't
Vice
, so no music = no dice IMO.
Personaly I'm not a big Hi-Def fan, particularly for shows and films made before the Hi-Def era.
Algebraic!
