Do they have to spell everything out in black and white? You can come to your own conclusion, but as I pointed out, it only makes sense how it just further demonstrates what a bad mother she was. I watched this movie with a group of people and everybody came to the same conclusion I did, so it wasn't just me.

They made no indication that he overheard it. I believe this was all to further demonstrate what a god awful mother she was and how she showed incredibly poor judgment
Did they make an indication that the mother ratted him out? Was that explained?
