I prefer Marion, although I do like Willie. Is she annoying? Certainly. But that's how her character was written and I thought she showed enough charm - even some wit - to make her likable. Besides, her presence wasn't really that unnecessary considering how much more grim this Indy movie was. And credit to Short Round.

Nope, she wasn't "Spielbergs date at the time" at all.
They met on the set and they married years later.
Spielberg was with Amy Irving at the time of the movie, and he even married her a year later.

what lets her down is being spielbergs date at the time, more so than her acting.
she would have been acceptable otherwise, its actually quite funny seeing her playnig a loud american so damn loud.
No way indy hangs with her though, shes several notches down from Marion (although she was kinda loud too, but in a way that suited her, Kates "loud" felt out of place because she only had one gear for it).

Still, Willie is the best indie girl to me and for many Indiana Jones fans.

I think its unfair : she is indeed a different kind of character, compared to Elsa or Marion. And its nice sometimes to have a change, and to depart from the easy formula.
But usually it isn't. 'Different' does not equal 'better'.
And, unlike what is often said about her, she shows guts and courage.
Marion much more so.
A superficial and selfish person at the beginning, she ends up punching guys, protecting short round and helping the best she can.
Again, Marion much more so.
Yes, she complains and scream, but she still does the job, joining in this nightmare to help Indy and to free the children.
Marion manages to do her job
without
all the screaming.
Its a far more interesting character development and evolution than for Elsa or Marion.
I think Elsa has the most interesting character development. Marion is the feistiest of the lot, and Willie the most annoying. Kate herself once described her character as "not much more than a dumb screaming blonde".
I might add that one of the reason she screams more than the other ladies is because the events of the Temple of Doom ar the most terrifying in the entire franchise. I guess anyone would have shouted as loud as she did.
Indy didn't. Shorty didn't. And do you really suppose Willie wouldn't have screamed as much in either Raiders or Crusade? Of course she would, she was a screamer. She screamed the most in the jungle scene, at any and every animal she encountered. How do you think she would have reacted to the snakes in Raiders, or the rats in Crusade?
At any rate, the screaming is annoying, regardless of the reason. So contrary to what you claim, Willie is
not
the best Indy-girl. Just the opposite, in fact. My personal nomination goes to Marion.
