It took me 30 years, but I finally saw it, thanks to a very nice HD transfer shown on the U.S. network Turner Classic Movies.
Truly amazing! And, for people who love road trip movies, easily the best road trip movie ever, probably by far!

I am not quite sure what the restored version has over the Criterion edition. I just watched the Criterion release and to me it looks like they did restoration to the film. I don't recall the film looking that good. And at the same time, I also totally agree with you about the charm of the original.
I was around to see the original in theatres back in the 80s. I recall it had the usual scratches and imperfections that films in cheap theatres back then had but the film and the sound track made a huge impact on me. Now watching the Criterion release I feel it the film isn't quite the same. The colors look amazing and all but they seem too perfecty colored.
Can this really be the end..to be stuck inside of mobile
with the Memphis blues again.

I have the original dvd version, and somehow its imperfections are part of the experience for me. I wonder how much different viewing the Blu-ray would feel.

This should give you an idea of what the new restored 'transfer' of the film looks like. It's beautiful.

What is meant with 'restored version' here? The existing version on Blu-Ray is already complete, pristine and gorgeous. It has the explicit approval of director Wim Wenders.
To show the 30 year old movie during its celebration at the Cannes Festival 2014, the movie has been 'reprinted' and Wenders was involved to check the coloring.
But is a reprint a 'restoration' of a movie?
