Okay, I'm going to go all Brit with my reaction to Paris Texas:
It's appalling, shocking, I say, shocking! How dare they hire a German director to film a movie set here in America! What nerve! And then, rubbing salt into our wounds, use French and German actors as well! This movie should be remade with a real American director, like Michael Bay, and American actors to give it authenticity! We movie-goers deserve nothing less!

This movie caught a lot of flack in 1984 from Hollywood according to the comments on the Criterion Edition second disc. A German director and German/French production crew with the two female leads also being from Europe? How dare they come to American and film a movie about us! It was pretty groundbreaking for doing just that, as heretofore that kind of thing just wasn't done. In retrospect though this movie had a ton of influence in spawing the indepedent film movement that would explode upon the public in the early 1990's.

Not quite sure what you're getting at here.
Americans are the ones that have to have everything remade for them using American actors and set in American locations because they won't (according to the media companies) 'get' more cosmopolitan offerings.
Although I often wonder if it's just a self perpetuation cycle where the media 'protect' the great American public from 'difficult' foreign productions thus ensuring that they never develop the understanding of films and TV programmes from other cultures.
Obviously this does not apply to all Americans as many will search out less parochial programming.

The story actually has nothing to do with Paris, Texas, so your comment is irrelevant.
That's not accurate. There is symbolism in the name which relates to one of the major themes in the film. That being the contrast between what is seen as fancy, sophisticated, worldly versus everything that is plain, mundane and ordinary. The Henderson men desire fancy women, but in their obsession to have what is unattainable, tragedy ensues. Here's a hint, Walt, who grew up in east Texas, is married to a French woman. Their marriage is barely hanging on before they lose Hunter.
I recommend you re-watch the scene with Hunter and Travis in the laundry-mat near the end of the film. A drunken, rambling Travis 'explains' many of the mysteries of the film.
That's pretty simple and straight forward. Also, consider that Wenders probably influenced this screenplay quite a bit.
Of more importance than even the director, is the fact that the writer is the American, Sam Shepherd, but he too has no connection to Texas at all. I think he told this story based primarily on his experiences in Chino, California. He could have chosen many towns for the book's name but went with Paris, Texas because the incongruity arouses interest.
