I just watched the Criterion collection DVD and it was sublime. Some questions linger though. It appears that Travis and Jane had an amour fou relationship, that was extremely intense and it caused Travis to have a meltdown of sorts. He becomes an angry, abusive drunk and when Jane could no longer take it, she grabs their child and bails. Now here's the part I need clarification with: did Jane set fire to their trailer home, while Travis slept, when she made her getaway? When Walt goes to Texas, the doctor asks him if his brother had ever been a car accident, the answer to which was never given. It's as if the doctor found something when examining Travis that made him think this, besides his state of mind. Even though Jane dropped off their child with Walt and his wife, it appears she never told them of the hell she'd been through with Travis.

the question about whether Travis had ever been in a car accident I think was an attempt to determine if Travis was suffering some kind of organic brain dysfunction due to trauma.
I agree with General that everything Travis said to Jane was what had happened.

I think everything Travis said while in the peepshow was the true history. It was the mystery we were waiting for the entire film. Yeah I believe she set the trailer on fire.
