time travel - Trek III couldve been like an 'undoing' of the events of the previous film in order to get Spock back
e.g. maybe if there had been no 'remember' or Spock coffin on genesis (as was originally planned I believe those scenes were late additions) so III would be hijacking the Enterprise to time warp around the sun to save spock but on the way they encounter the klingons who are after genesis so proceeds with similar events but done abit different - david death, ent destruction, genesis blows up etc (all without young Spock) but for the conclusion/last half hour instead of vulcan/katra swap they use the captured BOP to go around the sun and end up toward the end of TWOK (like the 1955 scenes of BTTF2 & the 1984 part of Terminator Genisys) cloaking device on, beam aboard the Ent and encounter their slightly younger selves and they have to try to prevent Spocks death (Kirk and Co sneaking around like Trials and Tribulations, & like Picard/Kirk in Generations redoing the end of GEN), without interfering in TWOK events too much (although maybe Trek III Kirk couldve encountered Khan face to face this time - Montalban cameo), before succeeding in getting the mains back on line before Spock can sacrifice himself and then returning to their own time, and everythings fine and everyones alive again (like the end of BTTF/XM DOFP/Superman/MOTU etc) - spocks alive and well, Davids alive, the NCC 1701 Ent is ok and has its decommission ceremony

Or they could have to the Ceti Alpha region, and beamed aboard Reliant to warn Chekov about the destruction of Ceti Alpha 6, and he would have told Captain Terrell, and the ship left the area.

or what about - the opening sequence the romulans are on genesis and find spocks rejuvenated body and take him off genesis, then condition spock as a weapon to use against the federation (abit like Yar in Redemption/Shinzon in Nemesis/Kirk in The Return/)..
then months later kirk finds out from sarek that spock is alive in the romulan empire and being used as an enemy agent so he launches an unauthorized rescue mission (so abit like what happened in Unification).. they find spock but he is now bad and have to fight him (kirk vs spock fight!) then they take him to Vulcan to undergo the ritual with bones

The problem with time travel is that there are no permanent consequences to anything; it's the death of drama.

Khan would still go boom but Spock wouldn't give his life to save everyone
yes theres no way they'd have done time travel again. So maybe wed have got The Final Frontier as IV
(in which case maybe there wouldn't have been a V or VI)

That could have been interesting. Spock's alive, the Enterprise never gets blown up and Khan is still out there somewhere.
However, as good as that would be, we never would have gotten Star Trek IV out of the deal at least, not as we know it. It may have ended up something awful.
