He is a baby-looking thing and thanks to the DNA of the husbands hair starts growing into a human right before her eyes, but (and I know it's because otherwise there wouldn't be any movie, duh!) grows into a kid, an adolescent, and a human male looking just like her husband. Maybe this is a dumb question, but when did the starman know when to STOP? And anyway it was baby hair, shouldn't he have gotten as far as a baby?

He went through their photo album, as well as watched the films of him when he was an adult. The pictures and the film were the oldest recorded images of Scott (since he was dead), so naturally he would take that form.
Besides, remember he told Jenny "I look like Scott so you won't be little bit jumpy"

Ha I actually thought about the hair too. Would have been funny if he had like 10 meter hair including chest hair hanging from him! Would have make him look much more freaky at the start lol.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but when did the starman know when to STOP?
He stopped when he got to Jeff Bridges age!
It's been a while since I've seen this (and I always seem to catch it right at the time they hit the road), but didn't the alien observe everything, including pictures, up until he found the DNA sample?
And anyway it was baby hair, shouldn't he have gotten as far as a baby?
DNA doesn't change, just the aging process does. It wouldn't matter if the DNA sample was from the amniotic sac or a tooth on the day he died.
