the scene with Grodin picking out clothes for Wilder makes perfect sense. The flamboyant leather clothes Wilder is wearing and him saying "are you sure"? then grodin reassuring that's ok and the robert redford hairdo. then the looks on Wilders work mates faces when he shows off his new look. they all must of thought he was a total fruit.

Great directing from Gene Wilder, a touching scene with an uncomfortable theme (for its time) yet he handled it masterfully within a comedy.
First time I watched it, I thought the man was the husband of a woman (unseen) that Grodin had an affair with. Then I thought he was the young guy's father. Only later I connected it with the "shocking pink" reference. A bit too subtle, maybe, or maybe I just can't take a hint.
Never be complete.

I just rewatched the film and this scene remains quietly powerful as does the 'shocking pink' scene shortly after. Definitely helps give the film some substance.

Yes, this part is very subtle. I remember seing the movie when I was a kid, and back then I just felt that Charles Grodin's character must be gay, but I never understood why. I saw it again today and totally got it. I even got the "Shocking pink" line. Even the joke about the man and the doctor which Wilder tells Grodin makes sense today.
This is a very good comedy!
You are my lucky lucky lucky star

wellgrodin's character is gay and his friends don't know that. the guy that comes and drops eric's bracelet off is his current lover and obviously discovered that grodin's character cheated on him with this young guy (eric). he throws him out of his househence he moves back into his unfinished condo/apartment.
then wilder explains to him that it's ok with him that he's gay.
