Hollywood practical effects, especially animatronics, has got to be one of my fave things in the world. Seeing the work on the Troll in this movie was such a pleasure! According to the DVD audio commentary, the Troll was played by a very short person in an outfit, on a giant set they had built with enlarged furniture (so big that they needed forklifts to move the set pieces around). But the Troll face was full animatronic and needed 15 people to manipulate all the expressions! 0_0 Wow! The commentary also mentioned that the guy who made the Troll for this movie made E.T. for Spielberg several years earlier as well.
I would consider this Troll, the characters from Labyrinth, and the Ninja Turtles from the 1990 film to be some of my favorite animatronic work in Hollywood history.
What are some of your favorite animatronic characters?
