did it have a problem or something?
n he could have slowly lifted up his leg from the ledge to kick or shove the pigeon off, instead of having to enduring the painful pecks till his ankle bled.
anyway how did the film director manage to make the pigeon peck at his socks? was there some bird feed on his sock or something?

The pigon was psychotic. They don't do that normally and their beaks are relatively soft. I used to raise pigeons. They are really wimps.

It was a bird. It didn't exactly need a well thought out reason other than "heeeey I poop there" peck peck peck

The reason it was pecking at him is because he was probably near the nest. I'm quite sure this is the reason from the book. Not that you need a reason for a bird to peck at your feet, ducks often do that too.
As for the "why couldn't he just kick it away" well he tried but he was nearly falling so he endured the pain and moved on. The villain wasn't that smart, reason why he ended up splashed on the pavement.

In the short story it's just explained that pigeons are very territorial in new york.
This was Atlantic City.

No idea. In the short story it's just explained that pigeons are very territorial in new york. They'll hardly give up their space in the park and places. The guy says the pigeon had a look in its eyes like 'he's in my territory now'. It's supposed to sense he's helpless up there the same way it would be on the ground. Of course, it adds quite a bit of tension too.
