So: a realistic, down to earth show..which is completely off the wall swarming with magic robots?!

That is not an error.
However, there is a fairly obvious error near the beginning that I never see people mention.
When Fletch first talks to Fat Sam we see Gummy walk into the shack. Then Fletch goes to talk to Creasy and we see Gummy wrapped up in a blanket sleeping. Looks like he was asleep for quite a while too.

Fletch did say "Cujo?" entering the house, hoping not to be attacked by another dog. At the airport, Alan Stanwyk would've been a no-show, so Stanwyk (using Fletch's identity) would've used that reservation.

Here's another: When Fletch is re-confirming the airline reservation, we can see that the reservation is in the name of Alan Stanwyck. However, during the final confrontation scene, when Fletch is reading his letter to Stanwyck, Fletch says that Alan flew to Rio, "Using my name and passport".

he says 'Cujo?' (as in the movie Cujo about a rabid St. Bernard that terrorizes a family)
