Tina, the guide was hilarious! One of my more favorite parts of the movie!

I LOVE the way Pee Wee rolls his eyes after that. It's my favorite scene in the entire movie because of how annoyed he is!

I've been to the Alamo and I don't remember them using tours.

I used to tour all the time with my family back then and the Guide would ALWAYS say that bit about how were we're the best.

I know that the tour of the Alamo scene is just a joke, but I'm still appalled how much the tour guide minimizes the Siege of 1836. She spends most of the tour talking about nonsense such as corn, and only mentions the battle at the very end. I suppose most visitors who come to the Alamo are there to learn about the famous battle and its history.
Well, that's just movie editing. Most likely the siege was talked about unseen at length, as the tour probably went on for hours and hours, just to bother Pee-wee.

By the way, another movie that features the Alamo is the 1969 comedy VIVA MAX (starring Peter Ustinov, Jonathan Winters and John Astin). This movie is about a group of Mexican soldiers who attempt to re-take the Alamo from Texas. It was just released on DVD and is worth a look. The movie features a scene where the Mexicans take a tour. The tour guide in VIVA MAX is much more competent than the one in Pee Wee's Big Adventure!!

I just got back from San Antonio. I visited the Alamo and there was a guided tour going on, but it may have been by special arrangement. Most people just walked around the few exhibits and then exited through the gift shop. The building itself is quite small and does not really need a guided tour like a regular museum. Pedro and Inez were not featured in the Alamo, but you can see Davey Crockett's wallet and Jim Bowie's knife, among other relics. It is most definitely a memorial more than anything else. Very little of the actual "Alamo" site remains; a few walls and the mission/church building, which does not have a basement.

I live in Texas. I've been to the Alamo many times and there is no tour. You go in and look around, and when you exit, there's a gift shop.
But I'm sure if there was a tour like that, I'd stop going! Lol

I wasnt bored. I was amazed at how small it was. I just enjoyed walking around and looking at the bullet holes in the walls

There is no basement at the Alamo.

It is supposed to be from Pee Wee's point of view, where he just wants to get to the basement and get his bike, where he thinks it is.

I visited my cousins in SAT a couple years ago, and went to The Alamo and I was very surprised by how small it was. Still enjoyed the walk-through though since I love history.

The Alamo does not feature a standard tour. Students on school trips and special groups can request a guided tour, but for general guests you are free to roam the compound on your own. Other than the chapel (the famous facade we all picture when we think of the Alamo) and one barracks wall there is little left of the original 6 acre compound. The city of San Antonio has grown up around the mission which at the time of the battle stood a couple of miles from town. History buffs can spend hours taking in the artifacts, paintings, and dioramas while the casual tourist can stop by the Alamo for a photo before heading down to the Riverwalk for a night of fun.

I live in San Antonio. I've been to the Alamo twice. I've never seen any tour guides whatsoever. In fact, if you go inside the building, it's just one big gift shop. It's just a mission(pretty much) just one big mission where you can walk around.

Is there really a tour? The place is so small. It would be like giving a tour of your house. This is the front room, this is the kitchen! Seriously, there's not a lot of real estate.

Strangely, I've lived in TX all my life and have visited the Alamo many times, but I've not taken the tour even once.
I doubt it would be like what you see in the movie however, simply because the Alamo is typically very crowded, and very loud what with all the visitors talking and shuffling around. It is really interesting if you love history though.

It's not really supposed to be fun after all it's a memorial site, it's probably not interesting to someone who doesn't appreciate history or sacrifice (the Texans and Mexican's both) so no, if every moring you wake up and thank God for your Iphone, Ipod and Taylor Lautenr or whatever his name is, it's not for you.
