I would be very surprised if Paul Reubens does not still own the rights to the character. How about Pee Wee and Dottie and their son (?) played by Johnny Depp?

Maybe that's because Tim Burton's style transcending intouh, Depp and his wife working really well together? Why else would they be in so much let alone Helena is his wife? I still like Pee Wee for what it is except you can't instantly tell it's his.

Yep, and maybe Burton would have given Damien Echols a guest part as Mickey; after all he and Depp are such good friends now, like brothers.

It was a joke. That is Paul's sense of humor. Everyone always boos when he says that in interviews.
He's still able to play Pee-wee he just did the Broadway show and it was great.

It's not a joke, Paul had spoken about it many times in interview that he wanted Depp to take over if he couldn't do it. And he has asked Tim to direct but he was busy at the time.

That had to be a joke. Why would Reubens give his baby away to another actor? Pee Wee's all he's got.

You do know a few years ago Paul asked Depp if he would play Pee wee in a new movie? and he also asked Burton to direct.
