What is this? Amadeus is a 1984 film while Purple Rose came out in 1985?
Either way, if we look at the movies that came out in 1984, Amadeus has serious difficulty even making the top 10 as far as I
m concerned. Bit of a bloated, populist piece of film, that - and somewhat overrated as most Forman
s films tend to be.

Any one of those movies could have won Best Picture and they wouldn't be wrong.

Yes,
Purple Rose
won the Best Film BAFTA over
Amadeus
. Incidentally,
Back to the Future
was also nominated that year, which I found more interesting.
.

Amadeus is my candidate for greatest film ever made, so naturally I concur with the original poster.
That said, Purple Rose of Cairo is a great film. I consider it Allen's 3rd best after Bananas & Hanna and her Sisters

I like The Purple Rose of Cairo. I really like it. It's a great film. It had the most creative plot idea i've ever witnessed in a film.
And yet, giving a "best film" award to it over Amadeus is completely and utterly preposterous.

It was well deserved!
I maintain that if somebody doesn't like "The Purple Rose of Cairo", they just don't get it.

Ross Kemp has a BAFTA. The BAFTAs are a joke.
It was certainly a weak year if you look at the Oscars as well. My favourite film released that year is probably Brazil and I'm a fan of Ran and Back to the Future.
