I also rate this moive a 10. I don't see it as trying to make a statement or display artistic skills. To me it's a hommage to the westerns of old. It manages to fit so many cliche's in with a nod a wink (and a chuckle) while still being a loads of fun and a coherent (if a little silly) story.
Great Stuff!!

There's no reason for a comparison, anyway. Most of us have enough time left in our lives to watch our favorite Costner films, our favorite Eastwood films, and our Favorite John Wayne films at least once more. So who needs to choose?!?
Frankly, of the three stars, there are more John Wayne films I'd choose to watch as my "last movie" than Eastwood films, and more Eastwood films than Costner films and I like all three actors a lot.
For Costner, I'd probably go with either Silverado or Tin Cup.
For Eastwood, it would be Kelly's Heroes, hands down, although Any Which Way but Loose would be in there swinging.
For John Wayne, the list is REALLY long. Great war films, great dramatic westerns, great adventure comedies all come to mind. How do you choose between The Quiet Man, McClintock, In Harm's Way, Sands of Iwo Jima, Stagecoach, True Grit, The Searchers, Donovan's Reef, Hatari!, and on and on. Say what you will about the versatility of his acting, but he left a legacy of VERY watchable films that is virtually unrivaled.

LOL I like Silverado but that's quite the hissy fit, ah I get it now you're a Costner fanboy. As much as I quite like Costner, he isn't anyhwhere near to Eastwood in acting or directing, period. As a Costner fanboy you lack any real subjectivity don't you as I will show below.
Just looking through your IMDB ratings you've given Costner 10 out of 10 for every film he's made lol, Waterworld, Postman, The New Daughter, American Flyers etc etc etc. Yet we are to take you as credible when you've given films like Pulp Fiction 1, Forrest Gump 1, Gladiator 1, Goodfellas 1, The Silence of the Lambs 1, Saving Private Ryanm 2, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 1, No Country for Old Men 1, Heat 1, Unforgiven 1. I understand people have diferent tastes but seriously? I bet it nearly killed you to give A Perfect World 10, Eastwood, directed and starred, good job Costner was in it otherwise it would have got a 1. It's people like you that make the IMDB ratings system a joke.
I wouldn't be calling anyone stupid or ignorant if I was you.

First of all, this was meant to be a fun tribute to the westerns of yesteryear. Second, OPEN RANGE is one of the best movie westerns ever made AND Kevin Costner knows how to make those masterpieces. HE IS BETTER than Eastwood any day of the week. Third, John Wayne was just ok. In every western, he played basically the same cowboy. Talk about having no range!!! Please. Fourth of all, the characters were great in Silverado. Not everybody has to like it but to say it's the worst is a downright LIE. FIFTH POINTget your stupid friends to tell you whether or not you should go and see a movie because you are too ignorant to make up your own minds. END OF LESSON.

When I watch Fist Full of Dollars, I think to myself "What's all the fuss about?" It's not a good movie, and it wasn't even an original screenplay. It was adapted from a Kurosawa film - not even adapted so much as copied it was almost taken cut for cut. So any argument against Silverado for being trite or unoriginal that includes Fist Full of Dollars in support of its premise is invalid.
Now let's take a look at the other elements of the movies and see which one comes out on top:
Dialogue: Clearly the winner here is Silverado. It's not even close - for one thing, all the actors in Silverado speak English and didn't need another actor to dub their lines.
Characters: Silverado's characters are immensely more entertaining and engaging (whether likable or not) than the various sneering thugs in FFoD.
Suspense: I have to give the nod here to FFoD. Leone could take a tense moment and stretch it out for days.
Cinematography: no contest here Silverado, above all else, is a beautiful movie. Some of the images are permanently burned into my brain they were so striking.
Fun Move Experience: Well, considering I own the Silverado DVD and watch it a few times a year, and couldn't make it all the way through FFoD before sending it back to Netflix, I'd say that experience goes in the Silverado Column.
So, since everyone here thinks that their opinion is the only one that is right, then it's time for me to declare (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) that Silverado is a master work and anyone who doesn't think so is clearly an ignorant wretch.
Half the world tries to be the other half.

What's all this then?
I saw the movie for the first time in the theater. It started out with the slow pan around the small shack and I started thinking to myself, this is going to be another crappy, slow western. Then the movie decided to prove me wrong. The opening gun battle jump starts the film, it made me jump out of my seat with it's suddenness. Then, when Emmett walks out of the shack, and the panoramic view just keeps getting wider and wider, I knew that I was in for a treat. I can't understand the posters that complain about the acting, as most of it seemed perfect for the characters, with the exception of the settlers heading to Silverado, I will admit that there is some very bad acting there, including Rosanna Arquette, who I found highly annoying, and Jeff Goldblum as Slick. And I also can't understand peoples knocking Kevin Kline's performance. Comparing him to actors past just doesn't work, he doesn't try to stare like Eastwood, or swagger like Wayne. If anything, he brings a Zen element to the character that I could only compare to Redford as the Sundance Kid, as someone previously compared the film to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And Paden does not, in my opinion, have romantic feelings for Stella, rather a genuine affection for a person with a similar attitude, and a dislike for the attitude and lifestyle of Hannah, which, as he states, is a hard way of looking at life. I found the writing to be quite good, the cinematography to be excellent, the production design and costumes to be the most authentic I've seen in a western and the editing quite well done. The best part for me was the Paden/Cobb storyline, two men with similar backgrounds and genuine affection for one another that have gone down different paths that make them reluctant enemies. Costner was refreshing as Jake, Glover stoic and determined to protect his family and friends, and show that, yes, there were black cowboys (30% of them by some estimates). Even Scott Glenn, who I usually find to be a bit on the wooden side, puts in a very decent performance. A great many fine actors in supporting roles, my faves being John Cleese and James Gammon. This movie literally had something for everyone and I think that 7/10 is low, though not quite 10/10.
Today, my jurisdiction ends here. Pick up my hat.
