I completely agree. I thought it was so terrible I turned it off 45 minutes into it.
It's just way too lighthearted, and cheesy. Kevin Costner's character is absolutely awful, and obnoxious. The music really adds to how cheesy the movie is. It feels like it should be a rated G, or PG at worst western.
I like my westerns a bit more gritty, to reflect how harsh the wild west was, and this is something like out of a disney movie.

Who cares? Just another IMDB grouch.
It's a really good, entertaining movie. I'm not a huge western movie fan, but this one was fun from beginning to end for me.

Far from one of the worst westerns ever made. I'd like to know what you consider the best.

It's far from the worst western that I've seen. But I thought it was meandering. Spreading the time over the various characters. I would like to seen it condensed. I was fidgety for the last 40 minutes. But I still needed to see how it was resolved. But definitely too many characters.

Any one know what the record is for oldest message board before a "worst ever" comment was posted? The oldest comment I could find on this one was from Feb 2005, so that's over 10 years. Good job Shia for noticing this obvious oversight. No movie message board is complete without one. Now, there was a "I hated this movie" comment, but this was the first official "worst ever" comment. I'm not giving you full credit because it was posted as "one of" instead of "THE" worst, and it was limited to the Western genre instead of including all of moviedom, but good catch nonetheless.

I love the characters in this movie - even the supporting characters like the little saloon owner and the traveling card sharp, but let's not fool ourselves thumb through your collection of great westerns and I think you'll find that most of the leads are playing one dimension characters. In fact, one dimensional characters are kind of a hallmark of westerns.

I sincerely disagree. I found the story fun, entertaining and amusing! Considering it was a "new" western, I felt it was well done and has stood the test of time. Clearly it's no John Wayne movie, but I felt it was a perfect intro to young movie goers for this genre in my opinion
