When I think of the 1985 film, St. Elmo's Fire, I am instantly reminded of The Simpsons' season 21 episode "Chief Of Hearts" in which Homer gets out of a meeting with Clancy Wiggum by claiming he has to attend a "St. Elmo's Fire" reunion. Going into the film I was curious what character would most be like Homer. It was easier to figure out than I anticipated. Rob Lowe's character gets into trouble with the police, gets into fights, constantly disappoints his wife and has extremely poor work ethic. There's no denying Rob Lowe is the Homer Simpson of St. Elmo's Fire but what about the others?
Judd Nelson's character is the most hard-working of the group and is dismayed at the laziness of others. He has an affair even though he loves his girlfriend basically just because the option is there and he can't help himself. I would say Judd Nelson is the Apu Nahasapeemapetilon of St. Elmo's Fire.
Andrew McCarthy's character seems to have been hurt in the past and it makes him speak very bitterly about love. When he gets the chance at the romance of his dreams, it blows up in his face and gives him more cause to be bitter. Beneath his bitterness he has a side of artistic creativity. I would call Andrew McCarthy the Moe Szyslak of St. Elmo's Fire.
Emilio Estevez's character is obsessed in his determination to land a dream girl clearly above his league. He is willing to change himself in any manner whatsoever if necessary. I would definitely say Emilio Estevez is the Milhouse Van Houten of St. Elmo's Fire.
Demi Moore's character has a desire to make others think her life is more glamorous than it really is. She has inner demons that she hides from the world. I would say Demi Moore is the Marge Simpson of St. Elmo's Fire. A further connection is that Demi Moore is criticized for being obsessed with Death and there was an episode in which Marge becomes obsessed with assuring the family will be Financially sound if Homer passes away. Demi Moore is obsessed with playing matchmaker for a supposedly gay friend as Marge tried to do when she though her father-in-law was gay (she was noticeably upset when she learned Abe was straight).
Ally Sheedy's character is willing to love but she doesn't want love to get n the way of who she is or what she stands for. She'll only stand by her man if her man stands by her. In this case I would call Ally Sheedy the Edna Krabapple of St. Elmo's Fire (rest in peace, Marcia Wallace)
Mare Winningham's character is an intelligent, caring young person who struggles to get out from under her parent's thumb, which is why I consider her to be the Seymour Skinner of St. Elmo's Fire.

Wasn't aware anyone watched the Simpsons past the '90s. The quality really started to wane in the late '90s. They've been in pure check cashing mode for a good 15 years.
