Of course I realize that was the point. But I watched this for the first time tonight and I don't feel right. I can only imagine how disturbing it would have been 30 years ago. My family watched The Day After when it aired. I was 10. I think I am more unsettled by this at 41 than I was by that as a kid. This was rough.

A really nasty film that left me depressed for days. There was not one glimmer of hope in the entire movie.

Its bleak and disturbing, but the scenario of Russia invading Iraq was wrong and has dated the film, and this makes it more cheesy when it had been the US.

Agreed, it's very unpleasant. Perhaps the best nuclear war film in terms of realism.

I don't know. The movie gets kinda funnier, to watch, with time. I mean, who pisses themselves over a the sight of an Atomic Bomb explosion? And why would you drive straight into a brick wall when a bomb goes off nearby. Come on! This movie, is silly.

Yeah, this is a seriously bleak and depressing film. The various ways society falls apart in the wake of the bomb being dropped are downright painful to behold.

Everyone here needs to read the book 'One Second After'. It follows a community and their struggles after an EMP attack. Truly scary and realistic. Had the same feeling after reading that as I did watching this film.

Not a 'date movie', certainly, but oh so important and shows the power of film when it's done well. Shows why horror movies are so redundant and lame, too.

Ditto. This movie was brutal just goes to show you don't always need some huge Hollywood budget to make a great film.

Amen to that. I had a similar reaction the first time I watched Threads. It actually scared me so much that, oddly enough (and I've read that others have done the same) the only way I could get over it was to watch it over and over again. The multiple viewings eventually made it less horrible, in my mind. After all repeated exposure is a proven way to conquer your fears. All the same, this is still probably the most harrowing film I've ever seen. Easily in top 3.
