The film was produced By Cannon films in 1986. Warner bros distributed the film. However only a few years latter Cannon films went bankrupt due to bad investments . My guess WB would have had to by the rights to the film from Cannon and didn't want to. or the rights were held up in court for a while.

The way things worked with Cannon Films is their film library was originally owned by MGM, then it became owned by Viacom. The exceptions were the Cannon movies distributed by Warner Brothers ( including BOTH Stallone movies he did @ Cannon 'Cobra' and 'Over The Top'). 'Cobra' is now 100% owned by Warner Brothers which is why at the end of the movie you see no Cannon credits ( I looked for them). As an interesting comparison if you look at BATJAC films ( John Wayne) that Wayne owned ( and Paramount distributes today ( such as 'Hondo') )but Warner Brothers distributed back then, you still have the Warner Brothers credit. Meaning BATJAC does not own movies like 'Hondo' 100% while Warner Brothers does with Cobra and can do whatever they want with it ( including removing the Cannon name ( which when Cobra was remastered, they chose to do)).

I know it's cheesy in places and predictable but damn it's fun! I've got it on DVD. Part of the great macho man heroes of the 1980s. Great times!

Yes, it did. It was a bigger hit world wide than in the States alone and especially going back nearly 30 years, it may not have been so immediately apparent as perhaps these days of global release dates, that it really would be such a success.

The movie was a hit worldwide. It made 160 million. And made tons of money from Rentals. It just wasn't as big of a hit as they expected in the U.S. But worldwide it did good.

Cobra worked better as a standalone film for me. Stallone already had 2 popular movie characters of Rocky and Rambo. 3 main popular characters would've been too many sequels which he already had with the Rocky films and 2 years after this film he was on the third Rambo film. Just like with Arnold Schwarzenegger's 2 popular movie characters being Conan and Terminator.

No, Warner produced the film but Cannon got a credit because Stallone was under contract with them at the time.
Meh!
