I first saw this film when my kids were kids and I still watch it when it comes on TV. It just feels hugely good natured and sometimes that's all you want from a film.
I have always believed in the kindness of strangers

I've probably seen this movie more than E.T. Both are great movies, but there's something about Navigator that makes it just a bit more special. Maybe it's the time travel element.

I'm 36 and saw this film first when I was 10 and even today it stacks up brilliantly.
The subject matter is more than just a sci-fi adventure too, I love how it covers David's emotional journey when his world is thrown upside down and he has to come to terms with his families collapse.
A very powerful and entertaining movie

When I was a youngster we used to walk into town and watch this on kinescope at the nickelodeon. 5 cents was a lot of money back then, but choosing between this movie and a loaf of bread was an easy choice. My Pa used to say, "You young whipper-snappers with your fancy doodad movie houses!" I don't think anybody in long pants would understand. I hope they show it at the 1904 World's Fair, when that gets here.

I really don't see why its never on TV any more it used to be back in the 90s.
But at least its on DVD now.

Disagree with last post. This is an excellent movie. When I was younger I could watch the same movies over and over. As I get older I tend not to do that anymore. You will find faults in any movie if you insist on looking for them.

This was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, up there with Monster Squad and Harry and the Hendersons. Bought the DVD when it finally hit a few years ago, and I must say, much of my love has died over the years. It didn't hold that childhood charm for me anymore. But one day, maybe my kids will love it. (Still love those little collection of aliens on the ship though).

I was no more than 8 when I first saw this and didn't speak a word of English. Had to Google "an alien eats a boy's hat" to even find out the name of this movie. Hah. Now I'm 21 and is working in the film industry
This movie has something that I rarely see now: charm. It pretty much fails on all accounts of story strength and technical and/or artistic execution, but it has a lot of charm, making it one of the very few movies that I can recall from my childhood. The post-Fight Club (and a dozen other movies plus world events) days just isn't as warm and fuzzy as they used to be, eh?

Well, I'm 62 and I still love this film. I've watched it many times since 1986.
Whenever I want to watch a film at 2 in the morning I riffle through my DVD collection, and if I haven't watched TFOTN for more than a year then I pull that out, crack open a can of beer, and settle back to enjoy it again.
The reason I'm visiting this board now is because I've done just that. Watched TFOFTN for about the 10th time and found it just as enjoyable as the first time. Magic.

I've been a fan of Flight of the Navigator since 1988. Our teacher showed us a VHS copy and treated us to punch and cookies. I like the way the film mixes live puppets with early generation CGI. Alan Silvestri's energetic music score was superb, too. The kids in my class liked the scenes with the dogs trying to catch Frisbees. Best E.T. rip off ever!
I have a bare-bones DVD copy of FOTN. I hope they release a 2 disc special edition on DVD or Bluray(like they did with Tron).
