This is honestly the first time I've heard anyone say that the film is confusing like you describe it, and I know many people who've seen it. I know a few people who thought it was depressing as beep and would never want to watch it again, even though they liked it a lot, but never "confusing."
Couple that with the ratings on IMDB and RottenTomatoes, seems to me the movie is not the one at fault here

Russians may love this movie and can rate it 10/10 all day. Not me.

The movie was not confusing; at least to me.
Experimenting a total war must be a chaotic experience, even more if you are a orphan boy.
I think the movie presents a well done protrait of this.
