was it seen as a stinker? did folks think of it as a joke? who saw it at the theater? It looks so low budget. IMDB lists it having a 10 million dollar budget for 1986 which back then the average budget was 16 million of which is exactly what Top Gun costs. And yet MO looks so cheap.

Just as ridiculously cheesy then as it is now.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

I wasn't born yet. I guess it wasn't too memorable. My mother loves Stephen King, and she didn't even remember this film. I saw it when I was between the ages of 4-7, is best guess. But hadn't seen it since then. I asked my mother if she knows a film where vehicles come to life and kill people. She told me "Christine." But didn't know of any others. I just watched that yesterday.
I just found this film today when I searched for films about killer vehicles. I enjoyed it. I liked it more than
Christine
. Connie is what helped me find it. Because I remember a woman who complained a lot, who was always yelling for
"CURTIS!"
lol And how she screamed about being scrunched up in the car. I still remember my great grandmother saying, around that part, how Connie talks to much, and that she was sick of her. lol
So I enjoyed it. It seems like one of those films that you look about on as one of the old classics. Even though it was a flop at the time, and corny by modern standards, it's just one of those films most people have seen. Like
Wizard of Oz
in the 50s. It's seen as a big classic. But seems I recall reading, at the time of its release, it was not considered anything special -if it wasn't a total flop.

My brother would watch this over and over again on VHS, which caused me to question his intelligence and sanity for a few years. I loathe this movie, although it would be fun to watch with a crowd.

Absolutely incredible!!!
Saw it in theaters when I was 12. All the adults thought it was stupid as hell. All the kids thought it was insanely cool!!
Watching it now for the first time in many years, and I still love it!!!

I didn't see it in the theater. I was 10 when it came out. I remember a friend and I rented it from the video store for a sleepover and thought it was amazing. I've watched it multiple times throughout the years, and I still love it. Yeah, it's pretty low-budget looking and a bit on the campy side even, but it's still got some weird sort of charm to it.

I saw it when it came out.
The machines come to life and take out the humans, that's entertainment!
Watched it again the other night, and though its kinda dated, its still
entertaining.

Pffft, my suspension of disbelief has higher standards than that.

I remember seeing one of the previews and remember a older kid/teen on our block on the military base we lived on in a foreign country saw it and was saying how much he liked it and thought it was cool but the guy was a total weirdo. I thought it was okay when I saw it, campy with a AC DC soundtrack, had kind of a cool 80's look to it but was really cheesy too.

My dad was a teen at the time and he saw it in theaters, and he said it was basically the laughing stock of horror cinema for a long time and that some people were anticipating it being one of the worst films ever made. Everyone practically knew it would be dead on arrival, which is why the film both performed badly at the box office and Stephen King still looks down upon it to this day. My actually enjoyed it, in a laughable stupid kind of way.

As I recall, it was expected to fail at the box office, so it did. It was a movie based on a King short story, and that was a sure recipe for disaster. The movies based on full-sized novels like Pet Sematary and Christine were successful, but trying to base a 90-minute movie on a short story was rarely successful. So it had the stench of failure about it, from the very beginning.
Myself, I love movies about homicidal vehicles, so I greatly enjoyed it.
It was still pretty silly, though.
