I wasn't around in the 80's, and didn't really discover this till much later from people who said it was by Stephen King and "one of the worst movies ever made". I recently saw it for the first time on IFC and really had trouble getting through it( But I must admit that Emilio Estevez and the little boy were actually good). So I have to ask, was this movie hyped up when it came out? I mean, it was not only written but also directed by Stephen King, one of the most popular and note-worthy writers in America and also starred Emilio Estevez who was a very popular actor at the time from the successes of The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, The Outsiders, and Repo Man. If so did this movie turn people off from King for a bit? It has quite a reputation as being a bad movie, I can imagine it might've pissed a lot of people off who paid to see it
I've got an ignore list longer than a Chinese pone book.

I saw this movie when it came out (in a small town in California near the San Jose area) and the theater was pretty well packed. There were a few hoots and hollers when Stephen King made his cameo. I don't remember people thinking it was horrible back then, although those of us who read the original short story "Trucks" thought it was a bit far off the mark.

I was 17 when this movie came out and Stephen King was very popular in Rhode Island. His cousin was my English teacher in High School and I had already attended his premier of Creepshow a few towns away and met him there. To be honest It only cost me a dollar to go see this movie and given the hundreds of cheesy movies out that year, it wasn't really a letdown. Also, the theater had a rockin' sound system and the AC/DC soundtrack was a fun touch too!
