I wondered if the election of a Jesuit pope might incite new discussion on these boards. Shame it isn't so, since this is certainly the best film about the Jesuits.
-sometimes I feel like I'm on everyone's ignore list

Oddly, i saw this film for the first time just before I read about Pope Francis's visit to the US. Strange coincidence.
Still, what I thought about during the film was my days back in a Jesuit college. In freshman year, a Father lived right down the hall of the dormitory. I recall a number of religious debates back at the time, about how Jesuits tended to be on the more "liberal" wing of the Catholic Church, particularly on the issue of liberation theology. I don't know if that is still true or not, but certainly, the Jesuits are one of the more well-known Orders of the Church, from its creation during the Counter-Reformation, to its missionary work and educational institutions, to its association with the controversial liberation theology, and the current Pope of today.

Well, the election of Pope Francis did not make me instinctually think of this film. I thought instead of my time as a student at Loyola Marymount, all the Jesuit priests and novice friends I have as well as the order's history in Latin America. However, for me the reverse happened. Watching this movie again recently made me instantly think of Pope Francis. Especially as the priests struggled with authority I thought of the irony of a Jesuit being a Pope. I also forgot that the Bishop in the movie was a former Jesuit. Only with the election of Pope Francis did I learn that Jesuits can even be promoted to Bishops or other positions outside the order as needed by the Church. It was just crazy to see it all at play here so long ago. If there were a modern conflict of similar nature I wonder how Pope Francis would handle it and respond to the local Jesuits.
If this is the best movie about Jesuits, what would be 2nd or 3rd? What's the top-ten or so best Jesuit movies out there?
