When the movie starts, a man is seen crucified and the Guarini are seen putting his body in the river where soon he drifts through the Rapids and is finally seen falling from waterfalls.
Who was that guy?

If you listen to the narration, some dude is writing a letter back home, saying the priests have been trying to convert the mountain natives and the last batch who treked up to there were 'martyred,' (killed by them). The guy on the cross is a priest the natives killed.
