<p dir="auto">They're both police Sergeants, who don't exactly make six figure incomes even today. Murphy lives in a ramshackle house from probably the 1940's that looks like its never been remodeled and drives an economy car and Art lives in a luxury high rise and drives an Iroc Z Camaro. Looks like Murphy was probably drinking away his paycheck. Also, I can't imagine his wife living in that crappy house, either. No wonder she left him!</p>

<p dir="auto">Good point. But I saw the movie recently and before Art agrees to help him he feels he can't risk his job and says "I owe up to here".<br />
And yes, spouses and children will greatly take from you!</p>

<p dir="auto">Art must have never gotten married or had kids. I knew a guy who retired at 50 and he attributed that to the fact that he never got married or had kids.</p>
