Exactly! The area I grew up in has now been extensively developed..but was a no mans land when young. It was a great time to be a kid!!!

Definitely. My surburb was surrounded by woods. We were always in them building forts or exploring.
And in the winter we built snow forts.

I remember the film it mentioning he was a lawyer. So in the short story, he died at 17? I've never read the short story.

and the filmed version ommited that line making hioma college graduate that became a lawyer. no mention of age

In the film's final narration, the adult Gordie says:

"Chris was killed when he tried to stop a fight in a fast food restaurant. He was stabbed in the throat. He died almost instantly. He was just 17 years old."

they was all around 14 - 15 in the movie were they not? or they were just small 18 year olds
