Watching this for the third or fourth time since it came out, noticed similarities to Altman's later (1993) film based on Raymond Carver short stories. Black humor, lots of intense vignettes, a common commentary on human passions and foibles. Anyone here know if Altman was influenced by Itami's work?

Much as I like Altman, I love Tampopo and find Short Cuts to be grating.
Tampopo is joyous.
Short Cuts is miserable.

Hmm I'm not sure but I've noticed that too. The roving camera and wipeouts are also Altmanesque.
