Typically on sitcom finales, a character will say or do something out of character. The following come to mind:
"Frasier" – the gruff and anti-mushy Martin Crane saying "Thank you" to Frasier, a callback to the pilot episode where the two have a fight over Frasier just wanting some appreciation for allowing his dad to move in with him.
"The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" – Geoffrey the butler addressing Will Smith as "Will" instead of "Master William."
"The Big Bang Theory" – Sheldon Cooper addressing Howard Wolowitz as "Astronaut Howard Wolowitz" after 12 years of scoffing at Howard's profession.
"Cheers" – Norm Peterson leaving his beer unfinished.
I'm not saying that Al Bundy should've channeled Danny Tanner, but instead just show some love for his family to make up for lost time. You can't call it "jumping the shark" if it's the final episode. Therefore, I'd have had no problem with a subtle fuzzy moment. On top of that, in the final scene, the cast could've recreated the couch scene in the opening credits as Al hands money to everyone while the theme song plays, and the camera slowly steers back like in the final scenes in "The Big Bang Theory" (the cast recreating the "eating on the couch" scene in the opening credits) and "Seinfeld" (the cast in prison). Fade to black. That simple. Too bad none of this came into fruition. The cast definitely deserved some fanfare.

I doubt it, because I binge-watched MF on Hulu from beginning to end. And seeing as how I don't like to leave things unfinished, on top of the fact that I had high hopes that the first season was a slumper and can only get better, I hung in there. You're right about MWC, though, because the first episode I saw was from the 4th season during its original run on Sundays nights. It was the episode where Peggy had to take a home ec. course in order to graduate high school. I still remember the next day talking to a classmate on the school bus about that episode when I was 10 or 11. Unlike MF, I'm positive I would've loved MWC from the get-go if I caught it from the very beginning, despite that it was so bland that Ed O'Neill expected MWC to be cancelled very soon.
Fun fact: Ruben, the nerd in home ec. who sat in front of Kelly in that episode, is Patrick Dancy. He also played a nerd in one episode of "Saved by the Bell" as Lisa Turtle's love interest (Brian), and was Laura Winslow's boyfriend (Ted) on "Family Matters." Basically, Ruben and Brian were both a watered down version of Steve Urkel (minus the nasally voice and clumsiness). Unfortunately, Patrick didn't have much of a career, but I'm sure he's happier that way, rather than being Jaleel White who was typecast. Money and fame is great, but sometimes being under the radar is a blessing.

Yeah, I gave MF a try and just could not get into it.
Perhaps I would have been interested had I started from the first show.
MWC though, you can pick up on it during any show in any season.

Nice! I actually started watching "Modern Family" literally one year after its demise, and finished it in just one month. Unfortunately, it was a total snooze fest. I just don't understand the appeal. Granted, Ed O'Neill was the only reason that show peaked my interest, despite knowing that Jay Pritchett strays far away from Al Bundy. Although, I give my props to Ed, because it's not often that an actor spearheads TWO sitcoms spanning a decade. Tim Allen came close with "Home Improvement" (eight years) and "Last Man Standing" (ten years). Although, LMS is actually nine years, since it was cancelled at the end of the 7th season and then came back one year later. Still impressive either way, though. FYI, "Modern Family" is the most recent project on Ed O'Neill's filmography. I hope he's okay, and if he retired, good for him, because then his career definitely went out with a bang.

I think it would have been funny to have them all sitting in the living room together and Al's last words would have been, "You know family. All of you are special to me in your own way and in that way, I find it in my heart to love you. After all, you are my modern family."

Yeah, followed by a "thank you" to the fans for the Emmy consideration. That should've been the finale. But since the series went on for literally 60 more episodes, I just wish they went out with a bang instead of being abruptly cancelled. Going off-topic somewhat, but…
the fact that Steve Rhoades' guest appearance in that car-wash episode was ridiculed via the home viewers discovering that he's just a chauffeur and therefore a loser in comparison to Jefferson washing cars, reminds me of a former co-worker who was the senior partner's chauffeur at a law firm I worked at (the boss's surname was first in the title in the firm). My co-worker was ashamed of what he did for a living, and would get offended when people call him a "driver." On his LinkedIn and Facebook pages, his occupation is "website administrator." In his defense, he does in fact keep the firm's website up to date. But driving the boss around is obviously his main source of income. I hated him with a passion, because he always took advantage of me by getting me to tell him about my personal life so he can go tell the whole office what I said. Apparently, he was insecure (about his job) to the point where he had to ridicule others such as myself by patronizing me and fabricating to the staff about everything I told him. He acted like such a child, and was basically a woman sitting under the hair dryer at a salon – always running his mouth instead of minding his own business.
To make a long story short, it's a shame how TV depicts certain professions. In the real world, Marcy obviously got the short end of the stick by marrying Jefferson (a car washer) who makes waaay less money than Steve (a chauffeur). Please don't take this the wrong way, as I am not throwing shade at anyone's occupation. But my former co-worker just goes along with fictional TV by perpetuating ignorance.

In one episode Al kept a photo of his family in the trunk of his Dodge.
