You're going to burn for this, Angel.
I am told that people didn't like this film because it was hard to understand. If I told you the ending, you would not suffer a bit and could still enjoy this film immensely, but I won't spoil it.
It is a deep and dark film, set in 1955 in Harlem and New Orleans. Cheap detectives, voodoo, murder, sex, racism - it's all there to add to the mystery.
It is a mystery - a missing person case - where our hero, the two-bit detective (Mickey Rourke) goes looking for a man who has been missing for 12 years. His work takes him to New Orleans, where he gets involved with voodoo and Lisa Bonet ("The Cosby Show") in her film debut. And, what a debut it was, as she and Rourke gave us a scene that had all the appearance of reality.
The film also features Charlotte Rampling, who, while not giving us the show she did in The Night Porter, nevertheless provides a treat as she lies dead with her heart cut out.
And, we wouldn't want to leave out Elizabeth Whitcraft (Goodfellas, Working Girl) who gave the most skintastic performance of her career.
But, the real credit for the film goes to Robert De Niro, who plays a greasy looking character that hired Rourke, and provided the twisted ending that makes this film a horror classic.

I've never seen that one. But Parker is definitely versatile.

Definitely different but equally as good.
Just wanted to give some love to Alan Parker. He's one of the reasons Angel Heart was so good.

I also remember what a "controversy" this film made at the time. One of the Huxatable
kids doing a sex scene. Especially the way it was done in this film.

Hey muttley, good to see you posting.
Everything woven together in this film is what made it great. It explored the occult theme with more nuance. It wasn't just a one dimensional horror film.

I saw this film in the theater and really enjoyed it.
The story was the story but I liked the scenery and ambiance much more. Alan Parker
was one of those sneaky directors that a lot of people didn't know about or realize
the movies he directed. Unfortunately we lost him last year but he left us with
some solid films. The Commitments is still one of my all time favorites.

I remember liking some ideas in this movie, but overall found it pretty forgettable. I gave it a 5/10. I've seen other movies and games do very similar things.

Such a great movie. I was enthralled from start to finish. The atmosphere was palpable, and some brilliant acting added to the whole unforgettable package.
