My theory is that the ritual worked. Favorite tricked Lucifer and Angel was innocent. Lucifer is powerful, but he is not all powerful-his greatest weakness is his pride. The ritual worked by misdirection. Favorite didn't steal the soul of Angel. Instead he imprinted Angel's soul with his own so that Angel and Lucifer would believe he was Favorite. At the end of the ritual Favorite's soul was hidden in hibernation(out of any body). After a period of time Favorite's soul would awaken and while not being a physical presence would alert Lucifer to what he thought was Favorite's location. I know this goes against the book, but this theory would allow Rourke to perfectly play Angel if a sequel was made.

The body could have been Favorites-Favorite realizes his soul is valuable only the flesh is weak. Too be incorporeal for a few years would be a small price to pay. Well, I imagine the spell or incantation to be sophisticated not doomed to failure. Satan is powerful, but not all-powerful. Any ritual would have to work on his weakness-pride. Rourke we be perfect-so disfigured from his prime. It would be the prefect allegory. The only reason I put forth this theory is because Angel isn't evil.

I never considered that idea.. I like it !
The only issue with your theory is that

  1. Angel was killed and his body was tossed in the alley in the beginning.
  2. Favorite was still himself until the brain injury.
    Perhaps he did pull it off and Angel is mistaken by Satan. It would make for a good sequel, but I wouldn't use Rourke since his story is over and he has changed his face so much

I say perfectly play Angel because of Rourke's appearance today-it shows his torture as a person and would perfectly capture the torture he experienced in Hell. Rourke has always been a damn fine actor.
