Hollywood Shuffle is one of my all time favorite comedies. Townsend documented the instituional racism and the typecast roles offered to black actors in hollywood. But he delivered his message by creating brilliant parodies of chacracters and scenarios. This movie was obviously the spring board for the new generation of black sketch comedy shows like 'In Living Color' (which was produced by Keenan Ivory Wayans & had Townsend as one of the key writers) and other things we see today like the Chappelle Show. Robert Townsend never really got his props, and is one of the unsung heroes of black comedy. Townsend even wrote a lot of the material in Eddie Murphy's 'Raw'. I guess his downfall is that he was in so many flops after he finally became commercially successful - like Meteor Man and his self-produced hip-hop remake of Carmen.
Wonder what he's up to now
Heck, yeah, THE MIGHTY QUINN was not only a good showcase for a then-up-and-coming Denzel, but featured Townsend in a decent acting role as a Rastahe's funny in it,too. I could be wrong, but it might have been an indie film, because I don't recall it being a box office hit, which is probably why it's been forgottenwhich is a shame because it is pretty god,for all the reasons you mentioned. You're think it would get a little more hype since Denzel was in it, but, no go,apparently.

He's got others. The Mighty Quinn is a great, underrated movie, more serious than this one, with some comedy, and some great things to say about the politics of the Caribbean and its bigger northern neighbor - essentially a film that could NEVER get made today. Love that it was made though. Townsend's star will rise over time in history.

I saw this when it came out in 1987, just watched it again yesterday for the first time since 87 and I still get a kick out of it, you can really see the similerities between this film and the tv series "In Living Color" his skits of several types of movies was so funny like "Attack of the Killer Pimps" I laughed my butt off, Robert Townsend was and is a great comedy writer, and let's not forget Keenen Ivory Wayans and the entire Wayons family for that matter, I try to see anything any of them are involved in.
