I concur with the O.P. I'm not one of his fans in general, yet I always like to catch this movie of his.

He's not a particularly good actor (not very much range, imo) - but he's been fortunate to be cast in some pretty good movies. (No Way Out, Untouchables, and Dances With Wolves among the best)
It was painful watching him in Thirteen Days - horrible attempt at a Boston accent.

The computer technology depicted in this film dates it more than anything else. It looks laughably primitive compared to what we have now.

Got to agree with you. It's a great movie, entertaining, great acting (Hackman always a joy to watch), believable twist and Costner himself never looked finer. (Saw this on the big screen in my first year of college and boy did I remember him in that naval uniform for a long time!)
Only thing that dates this is the 80s soundtrack - sorry Maurice Jarre, you were/are a legend, but this wasn't one of your finest.

He's a good actor and his worst - Waterworld/Postman was not too bad.

I'm sorry, I just can't buy Waterworld and Silverado. Putting aside my personal prefence even, there was a reason that both of those were flops and Bull Durham or No Way Out were big hits.

The top 5 movies that Kevin Costner shined most, in other words; the movies that could never have been done without him:
1- The Untouchables (his best Crime)
2- Waterworld (his best Adventure)
3- Silverado (his best Western)
4- Message in a Bottle (his best Romance)
5- Dances with Wolves (his best Drama)
In my opinion. But considerably looking at his personality, he's not a good action actor like Bruce Willis or such, that's why I didn't list no action movies of him.

For me it is between No Way Out and Bull Durham. Both are exceptional but so dofferent that it is hard to say which is better (but they are the only KC movies in my collection).

In terms of his performance, and, the quality of the film, 'No Way Out' is the best out come for me. 'JFK' is a good film but Costner isn't good in it. I don't find him a very good actor generally. 'The Untouchables' is another good film that he happens to be in.

I'm sorry, I thought it wasn't his finest hour. He's always like, really dry, especially in his earlier days, Dances With Wolves is a good example.

Yeah, there were SO many characters in JFK that maybe I need to re-watch and focus on Costner's work a bit more. And my main reason for loving that movie is the brilliance in which Oliver Stone told the story, however inaccurate it might be. I love the editing, flashbacks, surreal quality of that film. Yet at the same time it feels like it could have happened that way. That film should have won Best Picture in 1991, not Silence of the Lambs.

As for JFK, his character basically drove that film. I agree it was Stone's vehicle (aren't all of his films though?) but without a very good actor as Garrison it would have fallen on its face. This coming from someone who thought Garrison was full of crap in real life and sees so many untruths in the film. It still doesn't have a lot of plot holes however

Well, to me, JFK is the best film that Costner has been in, but I think of that as more Oliver Stone's film than Costner's. The Untouchables is my favorite movie of Costner's. But I think his best performances are in Bull Durham and A Perfect World.
I remember when Bull Durham first came out, Costner got really high marks from the film critics, but it seemed like a lot of them were also saying that Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins stole the movie. But I've seen the movie again recently and for me, it is all about Costner. While Sarandon and Robbins had their great moments, Costner's tone throughout the whole movie was one of sustained realism and perfect comic timing. He was never too high or too low. It was a great performance, perhaps his best.

Before I get my two cents in I must note that I haven't seen "Dances With Wolves" so I can't include it in my rankings. That said, Costner's best individual roles:
1-Jim Garrison, "JFK" (1991)
2-Crash Davis, "Bull Durham" (1988)
3-Tom Farrell, "No Way Out" (1987)
4-Earl Brooks, "Mr. Brooks" (2007)
5-Eliot Ness, "The Untouchables" (1987)
Garrison is his best role because he was energetic, magnetic and sustained audience interest for over 3 1/2 hours running time. As a whole, "JFK" is an intriguing movie, but Costner is the consistent force who garners the most screen time and makes the best of the opportunity.
Crash Davis had the most life and vitality of any Costner character; Farrell was a tricky and ultimately difficult role that he did a fine job with; Brooks showed that Costner hasn't fallen off the face of the earth and displayed his ability to bring multiple dimensions to a character; and Ness is a sympathetic choice because I think "The Untouchables" is the best overall film that Costner has appeared in.

I used to say that No Way Out is one of the only Costner movies I like, but I swear that keeps changing latelyI recently saw The Postman for the first time. I expected it to be awful because it got bad press, but I thought it was a really good. A touch long maybe. Costner comes across as stiff on occasion (that's how I find him usually), but for the most part, he was good too. Mr. Brooks was also good.

"No way out" is by far Costner's best movie. All his other movies are very forgettable. This is the only movie by him I can watch over and over again and still enjoy it. The movie is just "Cool". I've been to the restaurant overlooking the Capitol where Deffence Secretary Brice (Gene Hackman) was having lunch. Great view, great atmosphere, I recommended to everyone visiting D.C. Call in for reservations ahead of time if you want to sit on the terrace. The name of the place is Hotel Washington Sky Terrace. ph 2026385900

Ha, Catma. I agree. I am not much of a Kevin Coster fan, but I love this movie. I feel like Kevin doesn't emote much. (Though he seems to be improving with age.). BUT this movie is fantastic. Love it. It seems to work with Kevin's approach to acting, because the character he is playing has to conceal his feelings.
