So he did make at least 2 calls home. I forgot the first one where he said he was in Wichita and the next call is the one he said he spent the night in a motel room with a stranger. She has a good memory for hearing Del's first and last name from days earlier if that's when she heard it.

No idea if it was the first call, but it was definitely before the last one. The look on her face says it all. She knew who he was. The look between Del and Neal's wife is one of the best parts of the movie.

Do you think Neal mentioned Del's name to his wife on the first call? I've wondered if Neal called from the train station when they got back to Chicago to tell his wife he was on his way home and was bringing Del as a guest for Thanksgiving but his wife was surprised he was finally home.

I think he stayed with Neal and his family for a while. He might have even helped him land a better job, which would enable Neal to get on his feet. Now that he had a place of his own and a surrogate family, Dell wasn't constantly on the road. He wasn't running away from anything anymore.

But the movie title itself is a spoiler for your fantastic finish, isn't it?

Obviously Del murdered Neal's whole family then wore Neal's skin as a disguise, flew back to NY after the holidays and went back to (Neal's) work.

Always imagined that Neal offered Del a chance to stay with the family through Christmas. During that time, much to Neals frustration (it would still undercut their relationship despite their ventures) he admired, almost envied him for he had endeared himself with the rest of his family, particularly his daughter.
Neal, likely with his wifes persistence would be encouraged to find Del a job through his connections. However, Del would likely have bigger less realistic dreams for himself that would be source of tension between the two. He would always have a friend and a surrogate family in Chicago and would try and venture out, back onto the road for a while continuing to be a salesman and dreams of starting his own company someday. Somehow.
It would be a period of struggle for Del, but the pull of his surrogate family, closeness with Neal and his family would see him eventually settle back down in Chicago coupled with Neals insistence that he be more realistic in his goals and take on a job in which he could find stability and work his way up.
I can imagine, from there, his combination of hands-on nature with people, but sense of purpose would lead him to eventually find a new wife and partner and eventual success in the job Neal set him up with. The newlyweds would go on to start the business Del dreamed of while on the road all those years ago. Del's wife would be unable to have children but Del would continue to be a fulcrum in Neals family, through their kids as an unofficial Uncle.

I always wanted to see a sequel in there somewhere. It would be built on Neals anal-retentiveness and Dels larger sense of empathy versus how to go about making something of yourself in the world and their perspective on what "success" actually means. The results would further help Neal be the family man he should after years of success, and Del, the sense of purpose in his life by maturing in areas missing that were once covered by the diligence of his deceased wife.

I think Del made a friend for life and took on Neal's family as his own. He stayed with them for a while and then moved in a house on the block or he might have settled in with them and turned the attic or basement into his bedroom.
I could see something like that.

Well if you think about it, it makes sense what happened. Del is in sales and Neil was in marketing. Probably Del got some kind of steady job with the marketing firm and settled down or maybe became a regional sales guy.

I think Del continued his life as a traveling salesman, but had a really good friend in Chicago now to see when he goes there. It doesn't say in the movie if Del spent a lot of time in Chicago or not.
