Bittersweet is probably the most accurate way to describe the ending but I felt sad for the Del, so I think the ending is sad.

It's sad Del is homeless and probably by choice, because he can't stand the thought of being home alone, but it's kinda hard to feel sad too long once Neal goes back for him.
The look Neal's wife gives him is so touching. She's not just happy her husband is home, she feels for Del, she's heard about him, and she knows Neal did the right thing in bringing hime to their home for the holiday.

I'm sure they showed him going into his trunk at the first motel and when he brought out the mini liquor bottles for their little celebration. The next morning I like how he made Neil push the car in the snow. "Push fer Christ's sake!"
Tell you what…When I send my ex-wife her money…you can lick the stamps.

It was heartwarming until I saw somebody suggest that his dead wife is in the trunk.

The ending to this film always chokes me up.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

It's both sad and heartwarming in equal degrees.
