Is that when this movie is set? If so, all the aristocracy featured in this story will be facing the (gulp!) guillotine. That is, if they escape the mob in time.

The book is set in the 80s, but judging from the costumes, the film is set in the 50s /early 60s. They are absolutely perfect for that time frame.
Interesting about the Iphigniethere is a mistake then
"Please, if you are trying to convert me, this isn't a good time"

When they go to the opera in the beginning, Gluck's Iphignie en Tauride is performed, so, not before 1779. But the truth is, when it comes to films set so far in the past, the costume designers etc, usually don't try to hit specific year or decade. We're lucky if they don't go for a complete fantasy look.

I think it had to be earlier, judging from the clothes, more La Pompadour style, with ladders, lower hair and less powder. Maybe 1750s?

The novel was written in 1782, which was seven years before the revolution started.

Close's character says in the film "the century is drawing to a close" and the French Rev was 1789, so it must have been close?
We see the village scene of poor people and Azalan says you can 'find this everywhere'?
