My question;
In Die Hard, why did Takagi not give Hans the code? If Hans was able to get into the Vault once the FBI killed the power, why didn’t he simply play the long game instead of killing him?
Takagi assumed Hans was bluffing. He was playing along with the so-called bluff, running a bluff of his own.
He believed without the code, Hans had no access to the bonds, and thus killing Takagi would be aborting the mission.
You can see the part where Tagaki is sweating as he says: “You’ll just have to kill me.” He doesn’t mean that. He’s trying to show Hans that he won’t comply, so Hans will have to keep him alive and seek other measures. He believes if he gives up the code Hans will kill him.
Here’s the thing. Hans Gruber is a charming, charismatic, well-polished person with dignity and a modicum of morals. Do note how he agreed with Holly to arrange a couch for the pregnant woman and line up bathroom breaks.
Tagaki assumes Hans is not a murderer. Tagaki assumed wrong and paid the price.
Hans killed him, knowing that he could still enter the vault without the code, because he wanted to impress upon the other hostages that Takagi crossed him and paid the ultimate price, e.g. “He won’t be joining us for the rest of his life.”
