I believe there's a way to explain pretty much everything, from the klowns behavior to their weapons. But i need your help.
Specs:
-they're from outer space
-they drink blood to survive
-the clown-like behavior is simply their way of life and their reality
-their planet is larger and denser which causes stronger gravity. This explains the klown punching that guy's head off, because their muscles have developed more than ours due to higher gravity.
Technology:

Popcorn
: fast-growing bacteria that LOOK like popcorn. When they group together in dark moist places, they're able to somehow grow into a small longnecked clown-looking monster. This is proven by the klown putting a bunch of popcorn into a garbage bin for it to grow into a monster; the popcorn at Debbie's bathroom forming into monsters ONLY in a closed toilet, closed cabinet, and closed garbage can. The biggest monster came from the toilet, so i guess more moisture means faster growth. The Klown kept the popcorn in a closed bag, so i assume the bag is simply completely dry and probably laced with some powder to absorb moisture. They're like snales with a soft moist inside and a bit tougher ligament-like outside. The inside is the brain while the outside is the tissue used to form the monster with other popcorn. Why do they do this? They're natural bacteria that fit perfectly in their world and turning into monsters is part of them protecting themselves. There's alot more life and threat to them in moist places so it is the time they need to protect themselves so evolution gave them a weapon. Holy CRAP why am i doing this again!?..sighnevermind

Cotton Candy Gun
: ahh the big one. The gun has a cartridge of highly saturated pink liquid sugar mixed with some sort of poison. The laser carries a few molecules of the sugar which THICKEN with air. So by the time the dragged molecules get to you, they have become string that have absorbed the air. Plus the poison kills and slowly melts you. The laser is actually alot like negatively charged lightning and YOU(the person in front of the gun) is the positive charge. This explains why the laser circles around the victim trying to hit every positive molecule on your body, carrying the string with it. I THINK this also explains the limited shapes. The "lightning" tries to get you into a perfect ball in order to equal the distance between the molecules(like what a water bubble does), but that oval raindrop shape is the best it can do with a human body.

MAGIC!
: I wished they didn't have it..but then the movie wouldn't have been as fun. What is considered magic to us is simply their immense understanding of physics. They can somehow control air molecules but that power is limited. Which explains a klown riding an air-bicycle, causing shadows to eat people, and the fact that they don't use this power often. Being that they're so damn stupid i believe:

that power is part of their bodies..like an organ inside them that they're born with
or 2. these klowns are just the dumb strong worker klowns that have been given this power by the smarter klowns from their planet.

Energy BALL
: It is the klown ship's energy source.

I feel the balls and cotton candy gun are two type of guns that use the same technology but for different use.
Everything in the universe is made up of energy. Energy is all around you and the guns can manipulate the energy to either have the Cotton Candy that is used to capture and prepare the humans to eat. The balloon is used to capture and keep them alive. I feel they are either capturing them in the balloons for sex or they want to breed some for long term feeding.
I think of the concept of in Star Trek where they can make any type of food by programming the food dispensers. so the same concept allows the guns to create solid objects around the humans and manipulate them to the size and shape most effective.
As far as the popcorn, it may also need to be in a more open space to be able to evolve. being in the bag or a gun confines them in a hibernation mode. but I also agree that dampness could also be affective. Might also need to have lots of air to develop.
I also feel that the female klown women had sex with the two guys, and perhaps either they just wanted to hook up, or they are like some spiders or insects and will mate before eating someone. It is also possible the male klowns wanted to have sex with some of the women. Its not to uncommon in certain places in the world now for someone to have sex with their food source.
The balloon dog could be the same concept of nano bot technology where they are many little machines that form a big machine.
The pie is bacteria that is an acid to human skin. It is possible that it takes a while to burn the skin away so at the end when they all get hit by pies they just don't stick around long enough to see this happen.
perhaps the shadow puppets is a life organism that is being controlled by the clown. I think of the episode of Dr who when they are in the library planet and if a shadow touches you it takes over. Its like a pet for the Klown in order to get the people at the bus stop.
As far as the Klown that was driving in the air, it could be something as simple as anti gravity suit, or even cloaking device. Heck Wonder Woman had an invisible Jet.
As far as the Klown's only weakness is their nose, They may just not feel humans would be able to get there nose. Military and Law enforcement may protect themselves but they do not protect every part of their body that makes them vulnerable.
And as far as the Klown's looking like clowns and their technology looking like a circus I agree with people that say they came to earth before and we made our own version. If you really want to get deep, it may also be possible the aliens populated earth for a feeding ground.
A man can change his stars

No i have seen a picture of a naked killer klown without his suit, so it's not part of there skin.
I also notice what looks to be a hole between there chest and there stomach. At first i thought it was just there belly button, but it's to high up!
This i believe is where there tentacles come out to reproduce with human females and female klowns.
Just think about it, they could put the tale end of the balloon into there hole and then the tentacles go into the balloon.
Then into the human female and start having sex with them while the human female is still trap inside her balloon.

I noticed that the cream pies that hit the protagonists at the very end don't give any indication of dissolving their faces. Is it possible that the Klowns defecate cream pies, and our heroes are actually being pelted with the remains of the spaceship's septic tank?

As for the women in balloons, the balloons seem to be preservative devices. So I"m thinking their refrigerators. Women that young could be used to make more snacks for the trip home. Though i doubht they use sex, i'm sure they have other invasive artificial ways to make humans pregnant.

AwesomeDood, that was a fan-friggin-tastic post!
Ah, whats left of my mind.
Balloon Dog - I see in other posts that the balloon dog is kind of a mystery, maybe a robot thing. What about something like the popcorn? The balloon contains intelligent cells that are dormant until the Klowns blow them up and create a shape. Once the cells recognize the shape, they react appropriately (kind of like the toy robots you can get now that will react to their environment curious, timid, aggressive, depending on the mood you, as the controller, set). Maybe there is a pre-determined set of shapes that they can take, as if built in a lab.
I think the Popcorn and Cotton Candy Gun make great sense (sob!, making sense of Killer Klowns?!?!).
The magicwhat if it wasnt magic?
The shadow puppets what if they have some sort of black hole device? It needs a certain amount of time to properly generate enough power to enfold its victims and shrink them for easier carrying.
Or whatever would be appropriate instead of black hole. Admittedly, I am not a physicist/scientist type person.
The air-bicycle perhaps in the Klowns clothing, they also have an anti-gravity machine built in to help them along, maybe normally used if they are going over water or really rough terrain. Being a Klown, they cant help but to misuse the machine when its funny to do so.
The sex thing. Perhaps they too, procreate male to female. So well give them that. Since the Klowns were cocooning the whole town, perhaps this is a food expedition, so thats why there are only two female Klowns on board. This is just like a big rig going cross country delivering some meat in their opinion. The Klowns on board are out looking for food to return to their home planet, not there for total domination (dont want to completely kill off their potential food source, right?). And the girl Klowns might have different powers than the male ones, or maybe they thought the male Klowns on this particular mission were jerks and wanted some human nookie for the thrill of it.
Metafrontal Lobe I dont necessarily think the Klowns are dumb, but maybe they have no experience with beings as crafty (pfft!) as humans, so dont worry about their weakness. I wish the huge Klown at the end didnt give up the ghost so easily, that stretches it a bit (HA!,
thats
what stretches it of this whole flick?!?!?), but Ill go with it. It could be their first experience with humans, and I bet the first humans had to learn how to defend against saber-toothed tiger and how to bring down a Mammoth; maybe its like that with the Klowns.
Okay, my question, how did the Klown talk through Mooney like he was a dummy? Or was it Mooney still talking, somehow kept alive and under the Klowns control until he was done with him? Either way, that scene is
hella
creepy!!!
Man, this is one of my favorite movies!

you knowmaybe the klown noses are really hard to pop. Like a punch, or a pin won't do it. Dave always used a gun, which would be our ultimate weapon of choice. Could be the klowns didn't know of our invention of the gun.
And perhaps he was able to pop Klownzilla's nose with his badge because Klownzilla just had a weak nose but it wasn't a problem since he never left the ship and never expected to encounter any earthlings, threatening or not.
