I remember summer 1988, This hit theaters and freddy was everywhere, masks and gloves were all over stores for Halloween! Plus that fall, the new tv series came out and 2 rappers made songs up that one was in the charts, (nightmare on my street fresh prince) and then another one are you ready for freddy!! I was 15 and went to see it in theater, even then I was really kinda tired of all the freddy hype. I liked 1-3, but 4 was just getting too silly and he was the one everyone was rooting for and became more of a stand up comic, plus his makeup and sweater got newer each film and he wasn't scary anymore..

Those years were special and lots of fun times, we'll probably never see it again where a horror movie icon of some type is celebrated everywhere, sweeping an entire nation, where people can't wait to see the next sequel/movie.

Freddy-mania
started
with the first film. This movie was simply the peak of it. And miss me with the tired bit about him being a 'stand up comic,' and whatnot. Such a tired and exaggerated refrain that people parrot from someone else they heard it from, without even really thinking about what they're saying. I don't remember Freddy ever at an open mic. His fright factor level can perhaps be argued as having tapered off with next film, but he was plenty scary
here.
People need to divorce themselves from the idea of sarcasm and sadistic wit making Krueger a comedian, or less of a threat, because it's inaccurate. Fred was no less likely to kill you in the latter films as he was during the first few. In fact, he became more powerful as the series went on; to the point where someone like Nancy perhaps wouldn't have been as easily able to beat him in this movie as she was the first.
Furthermore, while Freddy's popularity made him the go-to attraction as the series went on, he was never the protagonist (the one to root for) in any Nightmare movie. This movie and
The Dream Child
makes it very clear that
Alice
was the one audiences were supposed to root fornot Freddy. I may have been a fan of Fred, but I didn't want to see him to win at the end. I always want to see him get his cummupin's, because the ultimate point of all these movies is good triumphing over evil. I imagine most fans felt the same way. You may go into these movies FOR Freddy, but gradually you start rooting for the one who defeats him; that was the theme from the first movie all the way through to arguably
Freddy vs. Jason.
This movie was no exception.
