I've read that the reason Alice is the good Dream Master is because her mother before her was. The destiny is passed down through bloodline. This is why Alice is so naturally talented at controlling her own dreams BEFORE getting Kristen's powers and why she eventually becomes talented at controlling the dreams of others. Later, in
Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Nightmare Warriors
, Alice passes on her status as Dream Master to her son Jacob upon her death.
The same can be said for Rick. Despite having no knowledge of his dream power, he puts up quite a fight against Freddy. This leads me to believe he too was a candidate for the good Dream Master as he's Mrs. Johnson's child too. BUT, Rick seemed to have even more control than Alice, in the beginning
Thus, I think NOES4's body count would have been significantly lowered if Kristen had brought Rick in instead. Then, he could have assumed the role of Dream Master, got Kristen and his friend's powers and stopped Freddy quicker than his little sister.
Heck, NOES5 wouldn't have been an issue either. The reason Freddy could invade Jacob's dreams was because a baby sometime dreams with his mother. Thus, Alice's nightmare became his too. BUT, even if Rick impregnates someone and the baby inherits his Dream Master powers, it wouldn't inherit his dreams as a father is not directly connected to a growing baby.

I think the symbology is obvious. While technically dating Rick she was more attracted to Alice which is why when pressed brought in Alice instead of Rick
