I think she appears in his life to help him realize his 'fate' with Christie. The girl talks about how its fate that brought them together but really the appearance of the girl helps Jake measure how greatly he loves his loyal wife. Clearly some sort of test but what I always found strange is how after he finally converses with her in the museum its like her role is over. Does anyone find her absense for the remainder of the film a little unusual?

The only thing I'm sure about is that at some point you have to let go…
Otherwise, your mind is likely to go YO!
